Life#
Salih Celalettin Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Salih Celalettin also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Salih Celalettin began work in Trabzon in 1893/94, at about 22, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Salih Celalettin in Trabzon, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Salih Celalettin then moved to Beyoğlu in 1895/96, then Bozcaada from 1896 to 1903. The last posts were in Maltepe from 1903 to 1905 and Haydarpaşa from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 814 in 1906/07, as 2. Müdür in Haydarpaşa, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
