Life#
Süleyman Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 35, in 1893/94, Süleyman began work in Trabzon, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 35 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1893/94, to 1896/97, every annual entry places Süleyman in the same post, machine official (Makine Memuru), in Trabzon.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1893/94, as Makine Memuru in Trabzon, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
