Life#
Haci Artin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Artin also wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
At about 41, in 1892/93, Artin began work in Kosova, paid from the start, on 800 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, 32 started at 41 or older. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Artin in Kosova as a machine official (Makine Memuru), where the entries run to 1894/95. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1895 to 1897.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 800 kuruş a month in 1892/93, as Makine Memuru in Kosova, when four in five paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 47,040 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1896/97. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre İstanbul doğumlu Ermeni devlet adamları" by HARUN TUNCA (2016) probably refers to Artin, since the name and the birthplace agree.
