Life#
Zeynelabidin Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1870/71 (AH 1287), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Zeynelabidin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Zeynelabidin began work in Trabzon in 1885/86, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Zeynelabidin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Trabzon, the birthplace. Next came Başkale and Van from 1888 to 1892, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1888/89. The last posts were in Trabzon again from 1892 to 1899, first as a chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru), from 1895/96 as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 1,500 in 1895/96, as 1. Müdür in Trabzon, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 1,296 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
