Life#
Ali Kamil Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 21, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Ali Kamil in Yemen as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1895/96. The annual lists then follow Ali Kamil to Keşan from 1897 to 1902. The last post was in Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) in 1902/03. The farthest post, Yemen, lay about 3,200 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 750 kuruş a month in 1893/94, as Muhabere Memuru in Yemen, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
