Life#
Born in Vidin in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Rıza began work in Istanbul in 1879/80, at about 13, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 142 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Ali Rıza as a fair-copy clerk (Mübeyyiz) in Hayrabolu. Next came Keşan, Didymoteicho (Dimetoka), Kardzhali (Kırcaali), Ropcoz and Serres (Siroz), five places in 11 years, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1895/96. The last post was in Buyuk karaburun in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 142 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 300 in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Didymoteicho, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 14 years the salaries add up to 38,208 kuruş, 46 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
