Life

Kostaki Vasfi Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a doctor (doktor). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Kostaki Vasfi also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 22, in 1889/90, Kostaki Vasfi began work in Diyarbakır, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 175 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Kostaki Vasfi in Diyarbakır, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Muş in 1894/95 and Diyarbakır again in 1895/96.

The salary went from 175 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 350 in 1894/95, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Muş, when one in four paid officials earned less.
