Life#
Ahmet Fehmi Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ahmet Fehmi began work in 1887/88, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Ahmet Fehmi in Serres (Siroz) as a postal official (Posta Memuru). The last posts were in Drama from 1902 to 1905 and Gümüşhane in 1905/06, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1902/03.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 350 in 1905/06, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Gümüşhane, when one in three paid officials earned less.
