Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Fuat Efendi was the child of an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Fuat also wrote Turkish and spoke French, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Trabzon in 1886/87, at about 14, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Mehmet Fuat as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Giresun. From 1891 to 1901 the annual entries place Mehmet Fuat in Trabzon, the birthplace, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1897/98 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 500 in 1897/98, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Trabzon, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01; the list of 1901/02 (AH 1319) gives the status word Vefat (death).
