Life#
Born in Rethymno (Resmo) in 1867/68 (AH 1284), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). The official had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 34, in 1901/02, the official began work in Bitola (Manastır), paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 34 or older. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bitola, where the entries run to 1903/04. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1904 to 1907.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Bitola, when one in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
