Life#
Born in Beykoz in 1869/70 (AH 1286), Ahmet Macit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ahmet Macit had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1896/97, at about 27, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Ahmet Macit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beirut, where the entries run to 1899/1900. Ahmet Macit then moved to Bitola (Manastır) from 1900 to 1906, with a rise to Mandapost Memuru. The last post was in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1906/07, with a rise to a post in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 825 in 1906/07, the peak, in the Havalename Kalemi in Thessaloniki, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
