Life#
Born in Lovech (Lofça) in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Hakkı Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Petrich (Petriç) in 1887/88, at about 19, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 140 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for nine years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places İbrahim Hakkı in Drama as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). İbrahim Hakkı then moved to Cayagzi and Balıkesir from 1898 to 1900. The last posts were in Poridi from 1900 to 1906.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 540 in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Poridi, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
