Life#
Basri Efendi was born in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Basri also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 26, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1896/97 to 1905/06 places Basri in the same post, official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), in Istanbul.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 200 in 1902/03, the peak, as Mevrude Memuru in Istanbul, when one in ten paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 18,000 kuruş, 30 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
