Life#
Sadık Şükrü Efendi was born in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Sadık Şükrü also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Tripoli in 1902/03, at about 25, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1905/06 to 1907/08 places Sadık Şükrü in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Al-Khums (Hums).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Al-Khums, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 9,000 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
