Life

Born in Cuma in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Halim Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Halim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 29, in 1905/06, Halim began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik), paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. Fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 29 or older. Both annual entries, for 1905/06 and 1906/07, place Halim in Thessaloniki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
