Life#
Born in Florina in 1885/86 (AH 1303), Eyüp Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a storehouse official (ambar memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Eyüp also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Eyüp began work in Florina in 1903/04, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Eyüp in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Thessaloniki (Selanik).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 7,200 kuruş, 48 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
