Life#
Born in Çorum in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Faik Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Faik had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 27, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From 1896/97 to 1905/06 every annual entry places Mehmet Faik in Istanbul, first as Damga Memuru, from 1900/01 in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası) and from 1901/02 as Damga Memuru.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 350 in 1905/06, as Damga Memuru in Istanbul, when one in three paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 34,800 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06. Mehmet Faik probably has an entry in "Sicil-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Çorumlu devlet memurları (1879-1909)" by HAYRETTİN ÖRS (2019) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and second number agree).
