Life#
Born in Çorum in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Hafız Muhyiddin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Çorum in 1895/96, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with Muhyiddin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tutak, where the entries run to 1900/01. Next came Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Kosova from 1901 to 1903. From 1904 to 1906 the annual entries place Muhyiddin in Gadduva. Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. Gadduva, about 2,450 km from Çorum, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 600 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Gadduva, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06. An entry in "Sicil-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Çorumlu devlet memurları (1879-1909)" by HAYRETTİN ÖRS (2019) probably refers to Muhyiddin, since the name and the birthplace agree.
