Life#
İsmail İlmi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "isci". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail İlmi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
İsmail İlmi began work in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with İsmail İlmi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Gebze. The last posts were in Mersin and Latakia (Lazkiye) from 1898 to 1903 and İskenderun in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 400 in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Mersin, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
