Life#
Hacı Osman Nureddin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1894/95, Osman Nureddin began work in Taif, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with Osman Nureddin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya). The last posts were in Mytilene (Midilli) and Izmir (İzmir) from 1899 to 1902 and Mecca (Mekke) from 1902 to 1904. Mecca, about 2,400 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1897/98, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when one in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
