Life#
Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a finance director (mal müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Tahsin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1894/95, Hasan Tahsin began work in Gebze, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with Hasan Tahsin as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Gebze. The last posts were in Kartal and Uzunköprü (Cisr-i Ergene) from 1899 to 1903 and İğneada from 1903 to 1905.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 500 in 1903/04, the peak, as 3. Müdür in İğneada, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
