Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Osman Nuri began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1894/95, at about 19, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with Osman Nuri as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Volos (Golos). For 1898 to 1901 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Thessaloniki from 1901 to 1904 and Şile in 1904/05.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1897/98, as Posta Memuru in Volos, when one in three paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 300 kuruş. In all, five years of salary come to 20,400 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
