Life#
Mehmet Memduh Bey was born in Ezine in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs director (rüsumat müdürü). Schooling took 14 years, at the School of Law (Hukuk Mektebi); Mehmet Memduh also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of French.
Unpaid work as a mülazım (apprentice) lasted four years. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Mehmet Memduh in Mersin as an assistant at a court of first instance (Bidayet Mahkemesi Muavini), where the entries run to 1897/98. Next came Chios (Sakız) from 1898 to 1901, then Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1901 to 1906. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1906 to 1912, first as Bidayet Mahkeme Azasi, from 1909/10 as 2. Ticaret Mahkemesi Riyaseti and from 1910/11 as 1. Ticaret Mahkemesi Azasi.
