Life#
Ali Rıza Bey was born in Mytilene (Midilli) in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Defter Memuru". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1884/85, Ali Rıza began work in the postal service (Posta) in Tripoli (Trablusgarp), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Ali Rıza in Tripoli as Zabit Memuru, where the entries run to 1899/1900. From 1900 to 1912 every annual entry places Ali Rıza in Istanbul, with four changes of title, from office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi) to Muavin in 1911/12.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 1,500 in 1909/10, the peak, as an examining clerk (Mümeyyiz) in Istanbul, when four in five paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 210,000 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1911/12. Ali Rıza received a rank (rütbe), the Mecidi order and a medal ("Hicaz demiryolu").
