Life

Born in Mytilene (Midilli) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); the official also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 20, in 1895/96, the official began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 210 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places the official in Beyoğlu as an official (Memur). Next came Volos (Golos), Tripoli (Trablusgarp), Galadinic and Dafni, four places in four years, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1899/1900. The last post was in Hama in 1901/02, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.

Pay rose from 210 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 800 in 1901/02, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Hama, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1901/02, the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death).
