Life#
Ali Niyazi Efendi was born in Isparta in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Niyazi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ali Niyazi began work in Hamidabad in 1889/90, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Ali Niyazi in Burdur as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1898/99. The annual lists then follow Ali Niyazi back to Isparta, the birthplace, from 1899 to 1903. The last posts were in Manavgat in 1903/04 and Adana in 1906/07.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 500 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Adana, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. Ali Niyazi probably has an entry in "II. Abdülhamid döneminde Ispartalı memurlar (Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre 1879-1909)" by MUSTAFA KAYA (2014) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
