Life#
İsmail Vasıf Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Vasıf also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 18, in 1892/93, İsmail Vasıf began work in Van, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places İsmail Vasıf in Muş as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Next came Jaffa in 1900/01, then a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1901 to 1903. The annual lists then follow İsmail Vasıf to Bakırköy in 1903/04, then back to Istanbul from 1904 to 1906. The last post was in Heybeliada in 1906/07.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Muş, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
