Life#
Born in Isparta in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nuri Efendi was the child of a municipal official (belediye memuru). Mehmet Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Isparta in 1897/98, at about 18, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1903/04, with Mehmet Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Konya, where the entries run to 1905/06. From 1906 to 1909 the annual entries place Mehmet Nuri in Antalya.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 300 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Antalya, when one in four paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 19,800 kuruş, 66 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
