Life#
Born in Karaman in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nuri Efendi was the child of a director (müdür). Mehmet Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1901/02, Mehmet Nuri began work, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Mehmet Nuri in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Konya.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Konya, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 13,800 kuruş, 62 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
