Life#
Born in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdurrahim Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Abdurrahim also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1901/02, Abdurrahim began work in Ioannina, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Abdurrahim in Ioannina, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Preveza (Preveze) from 1905 to 1907 and Ioannina again in 1907/08.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 15,000 kuruş, 58 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
