Mehmet Yahya Efendi

Muslim (Müslüman). Born in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1878/79 (AH 1296). On record 1903 to 1905, 2 annual entries.

Life

Born in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Yahya Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Mehmet Yahya also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).

At about 16, in 1895/96, Mehmet Yahya began work in Ioannina, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. Both annual entries, for 1903/04 and 1904/05, place Mehmet Yahya in Ioannina, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
