Life#
Born in Crete (Girit) in 1886/87 (AH 1304), İbrahim Edhem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). İbrahim Edhem had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Söke in 1902/03, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1907/08, every annual entry places İbrahim Edhem in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Ioannina (Yanya).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 350 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when 32 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
