Life

Ahmet Kenan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1886/87 (AH 1304) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 19, in 1906/07, Ahmet Kenan began work in Aksaray, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Ahmet Kenan in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
