Life#
Abdullah Nazım Efendi was born in Hamidabad in 1886/87 (AH 1304), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 10, in 1896/97, Abdullah Nazım began work in Mezraa, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Only 33 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 10 or younger. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Abdullah Nazım in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Kastamonu.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to 400 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kastamonu, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less.
