Life

Namık Şükrü Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1886/87 (AH 1304) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Namık Şükrü also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.

Work began in Kayseri in 1903/04, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places Namık Şükrü in Kayseri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1906 to 1908.

The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to 300 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kayseri, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 13,800 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
