Life#
Born in Çankırı in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Mustafa Remzi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an accountant of a sub-province (sancak muhasebecisi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Keskin in 1881/82, at about 27, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Mustafa Remzi as Katip in Keskin. Mustafa Remzi then moved to Boğazlıyan, Beyobasi and Kırşehir from 1884 to 1890, then Yozgat from 1890 to 1896. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Remzi to Tetovo (Kalkandelen), Seferihisar and Kayseri from 1896 to 1906, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1896/97 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1899/1900. The last posts were in Kırşehir again from 1906 to 1910.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 900 in 1902/03, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Kayseri, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 28 years of salary come to 198,780 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1909/10. Mustafa Remzi probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahval defterlerinde kayıtlı Kengırı (Çankırı) doğumlu devlet memurları (1879-1909)" by UĞUR BÖYÜKDİKMEN (2025) (the name, the birthplace and the birth year agree).
