Life#
Born in Kayseri in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Mehmet Cemalettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1875/76, Mehmet Cemalettin began work in Kayseri, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Mehmet Cemalettin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo (Halep). Next came Adana in 1878/79, then a return to Kayseri, the birthplace, from 1879 to 1892. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Cemalettin to Yozgat, İncesu, Ankara and Erzurum, four places in eight years. The last post was in Ereğli in 1900/01, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 540 in 1900/01, as 3. Müdür in Ereğli, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 24 years the salaries add up to 113,520 kuruş, 77 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1900/01; the list of 1901/02 (AH 1319) gives the status word Vefat (death).
