Life#
Born in Kayseri in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ömer Lütfi Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Ömer Lütfi began work in Erdek in 1873/74, at about 17, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Ömer Lütfi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Erdek. Ömer Lütfi then moved to Karacabey (Mihaliç) from 1874 to 1876, then Bursa from 1876 to 1880. The annual lists then follow Ömer Lütfi to five places in 14 years, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1887/88, then Haydarpaşa from 1894 to 1900. Next came Mocha (Muha) and Al Luhayyah (Luhayye) from 1900 to 1903. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1903 to 1906. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. Sheikh Said, about 3,000 km from Kayseri, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 1,500 in 1889/90, the peak, as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in Sheikh Said, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
