Life#
Ahmet Muhittin Bey was born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Nakibul Esraf". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Muhittin also wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in the Evrak Kalemi in Sinop in 1869/70, at about 15, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1900/01 to 1910/11 places Ahmet Muhittin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as Meclis-i Maliye Azaligi, from 1901/02 as PT Nezareti Muhasebeciligi, from 1902/03 as Meclis-i Maliye Azaligi and from 1909/10 as PT Umumu Telgraf Muduru.
The salary went from 6,000 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 8,000 in 1902/03, the peak, as Meclis-i Maliye Azaligi in Istanbul, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 468,000 kuruş, 13.9 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by 7 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
