Life#
Born in Rhodes (Rodos) in 1886/87 (AH 1304) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Halil Behzat Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Halil Behzat also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Halil Behzat began work in Konya in 1904/05, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1904/05 and 1905/06, place Halil Behzat in Konya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 250 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Konya, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
