Life#
Salih Efendi was born in Hârșova (Hırsova) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Salih began work in Kastamonu in 1900/01, at about 26, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Salih in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Kastamonu.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 400 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kastamonu, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
