Life#
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Tevfik also wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
Mehmet Tevfik began work in Kirkuk in 1900/01, at about 26, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1903/04, with Mehmet Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kadhimiya (Kâzımiye), where the entries run to 1905/06. The last post was in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1906/07.
