Life#
Abdürrezzak Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Abdürrezzak also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Abdürrezzak began work in Istanbul in 1883/84, at about 17, paid from the start, on 65 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Abdürrezzak in Istanbul in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi). Next came Hammar from 1885 to 1894, then Basra from 1894 to 1897. The annual lists then follow Abdürrezzak back to Hammar from 1897 to 1901. The last posts were in Cemcemal from 1901 to 1905 and Baghdad, the birthplace, from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1901/02.
Pay rose from 65 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 800 in 1906/07, as Başmemur in Baghdad, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
