Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mahmut Celaleddin Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 11, in 1886/87, Mahmut Celaleddin began work in Tortum, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 2 per cent started at 11 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1886/87, places Mahmut Celaleddin in Hınıs as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1898/99. Mahmut Celaleddin then moved to Malazgirt in 1899/1900. The last posts were in Kastamonu from 1900 to 1906. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to 480 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kastamonu, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
