Life#
Born in Crete (Girit) in 1884/85 (AH 1302), Mahmut Hulusi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mahmut Hulusi also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mahmut Hulusi began work in Istanbul in 1905/06, at about 20, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. From 1905/06 to 1911 every annual entry places Mahmut Hulusi in Istanbul, first in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), from 1906/07 in the Mustesar Kalemi, from 1907/08 in the Mesalihi Kalemi and from 1911 as Kiymetli Esya Memuru.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to 400 in 1906/07, the peak, in the Mustesar Kalemi in Istanbul, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1911.
