Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1884/85 (AH 1302), Mehmet İhsan Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Mehmet İhsan had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1905/06, at about 20, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1905/06 to 1906/07 places Mehmet İhsan in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi), from 1906/07 in the Idare Kalemi.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to a peak of 340 in 1906/07, in the Idare Kalemi in Istanbul, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
