Life#
Mehmet Nadir Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1885/86 (AH 1303) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Nadir also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1905/06, at about 19, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1905/06, places Mehmet Nadir in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Gebze in 1906/07 and Mudanya from 1907 to 1909.
The salary went from 75 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to 400 in 1907/08, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mudanya, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 14,100 kuruş, 74 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
