Life#
Born in Delvine in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a land registry official (tapu memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Hüsnü also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Delvine in 1902/03, at about 22, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Ioannina (Yanya) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Louros (Loros) from 1904 to 1906.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 358 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Louros, when 34 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 11,592 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
