Life#
Born in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hafız Hüseyin Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Hüseyin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
At about 14, in 1891/92, Hüseyin began work in Filiates (Filat), with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Hüseyin in Keşan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Hüseyin to Çatalca, Kardzhali (Kırcaali), Edirne, Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Dereköy, five places in six years, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1902/03. The last posts were in Ağrı (Karakilise) from 1903 to 1906.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 500 in 1902/03, the peak, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Dereköy, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
