Life#
Durmuş Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Kavas". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Durmuş also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 8, in 1885/86, Durmuş began work in Istanbul, with 11 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, 6 started at 8 or younger. Only 31 of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for 11 years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Durmuş as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya). Next came Larissa in 1897/98. The last posts were in Davohitce from 1899 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 600 in 1899/1900, as 3. Müdür in Davohitce, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
